NanoCoatings also has equipment to measure basic material tribological-properties, such as coefficient of friction (COF)/wear factor, sand-abrasion, and sand-erosion. We maintain two commercial testing machines from Faville Le Vally, a block-on-ring tester (testing per ASTM G77) and a multispecimen wear tester which can be used to obtain COF under dry or liquid/grease lubrication conditions. Tested surfaces are photographed to provide a wear-scar which is used to calculate a wear-factor which can be used to rank different materials or coatings.

Sand erosion is available with a small sand-blast chamber with a special mounting fixture. Sand-abrasion testing using the rotating rubber-wheel method (per ASTM G65) can be obtained through a user-fee arrangement with the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
